Air Drop: Where we are not
A one-day event with Onur Ceritoğlu, Ellakajsa Nordström and Ylva Trapp at 5533.

Saturday September 6, 14:00-18:00

Onur Ceritoğlu has been an artist-in-resident at Slakthusateljéerna in Stockholm during September 2012 and Ellakajsa Nordström and Ylva Trapp at 5533 in Istanbul. At the 5533 event, Where we are not, they will present work from their respective residencies.

15:00 reading by Ellakajsa Nordström and Ylva Trapp
15:30 Onur Ceritoğlu tries to answer the question Why do we have plants at home?

Homeplants, a plant-sculpture-decoration, took form in Onur Ceritoğlu’s studio at Slakthusateljéerna during his residency. The plants are propagated from leaf cuttings, some of them donated to the artist and some of them he grew himself. As the stay in Stockholm came to an end, the plants continued a nomadic life in Stockholm. They are now temporary guests in people’s homes as voluntary hosts take care of them for a maximum of three weeks before the plants continue to the next host.

Ellakajsa Nordström and Ylva Trapp have been collecting ways of measuring time, scales, rhythms and flow during their stay in Istanbul. During this one-day event they will launch a new blog called Scripts for a city. Blog titles include: To measure distances by trying to see each other from as far away as possible, To record sounds by using pen and paper, To experience time passing by repeating a selected movement, and To use the gaze as a camera to record a repeated walk.

Onur Ceritoğlu (b. 1983, İstanbul) lives and works in Istanbul. His work deals primarily with aspects of interior and furniture design, home environments and participation. He has a BA in architecture from Istanbul Technical University, MA in Visual Arts and Communication Design from Sabancı University. Selected exhibitions include: Park: Shared (2012, 5533-İstanbul); Burç Alaiye (2012, KABA HAT-Alanya); After Working Hours (2012, KABA HAT-Ankara); Thief (2011, Protocinema-İstanbul); Park: Probably (2010, İstanbul),

Ellakajsa Nordström (b.1979, Göteborg) lives and works in Stockholm. Ylva Trapp (b.1981, Uppsala) lives and works in Stockholm. In their collaborative work they transform their every-day surroundings by copying, repeating, scrutinizing and dwelling on small details, gestures and behaviors. Ylva Trapp holds a MA in Fine Art from Konstfack, Stockholm and a BA in Fine Art from Umeå Art Academy. Ellakajsa Nordström holds a BA from Central St Martins in Fine Art. Selected collaborative exhibitions include: In several aspects (Halka Art Project, Istanbul 2012); Open studios (IASPIS, Stockholm 2012); Hem ljuva hem (Konsthall c, Stockholm 2011); Holmgårdsvägen 34 (Konstfack, Stockholm 2010); Aspuddsbadet (Konstfack, Stockholm 2009).

About AIR Drop

AIR Drop Stockholm/Istanbul gives artists based in Sweden and Turkey the opportunity to change environment for five weeks. The residency includes a public presentation and is funded by Framtidens Kultur. The project aims to provide space for individual practices and to create artists’ networks between individuals, locations, and organisations. Air Drop is run by Maria Andersson and Katarina Lundgren, artists and members of Slakthusateljéerna in collaboration with Nancy Atakan, Volkan Aslan and Nazli Gürlek at 5533. http://imc5533.blogspot.se/

In May, Hera Buyuktascian and Santiago Mostyn were AIR Drop’s first artists-in-residence: Hera Buyuktascian at Slakthusateljéerna in Stockholm and Santiago Mostyn at 5533 in Istanbul. After the residencies they had a one-night-exhibition at Slakthusateljéerna.

In September Slakthusateljéerna will host the exhibition Perspectivism, curated by the Brazilian curator Cinthya Oliveira. Perspectivism is Cinthya Oliveira’s degree project from the Curatorial Program for Professionals in Arts, Crafts and Design at Konstfack in Stockholm, and the project is carried out in collaboration with CuratorLab and Konstfack. Perspectivism is a group exhibition bringing together five emerging artists: Adrianna Palazzolo (b. 1982 in Toronto), Mark Leckey (b. 1964 in Birkenhead), Niklas Tafra (b. 1982 in Stockholm), Patrick Goddard (b. 1981 in London ) and Sanna Marander (b. 1977 in Helsingborg). Their works explore or propose a redistribution of the relations between humans and non-humans, subjects and objects, culture and nature. The categories are not explored by the artists in terms of dualistic or opposing systems, but they rather present them in another ordering, enchained in non-hierarchical relations. The project’s conceptual basis is grounded in the theory of perspectivism developed by anthropologist Eduardo Viveiros de Castro, from ethnological studies of the concept of personhood and cosmological settings of the indigenous people in the Amazon. The collaboration with Slakthusateljéerna is organized by Malin Pettersson Öberg, in order to enable an exchange between Cinthya Oliveira, the participating artists and Slakthusateljéerna’s internationally active members. The exhibition introduces the participating artists to a wider audience in Stockholm, and brings together art professionals from Brazil, Canada, Japan, UK, Finland, Turkey and Sweden. Welcome!

/
PERSPECTIVISM

Exhibition at Slakthusateljeérna from 19th to 23th September 2012
Opening on 19th September at 6pm, with performances by Patrick Goddard and Niklas Taffra

With the artists:
Adrianna Palazzolo
Mark Leckey
Niklas Tafra
Patrick Goddard
Sanna Marander

The exhibition Perspectivism is part of a long-term research on recent studies into indigenous cosmology, anthropological methods, and current practices in art. The term perspectivism was coined by Brazilian anthropologist Eduardo Viveiros de Castro from an examination of certain indigenous practices – such as cannibalism, war of revenge, accumulation of names, shamanism – from which he attempts to render visible or transliterate a general philosophy of Amazonian indigenous people.

One of the principal aspects of this philosophy consists in how it conceptualizes the self, putting forward a model that would express a radical sense of incompleteness, a necessity of others, or an ‘unthinkability’ of a world without others. Yet, another key aspect of this philosophy consists in proposing a cosmological “coup” – that is, a radical change in the vision of the world and the place of humans in it. For perspectivism, objects and subjects are both part of the same classificatory order, and, therefore, their relationship would be exempt from any hierarchical attribute. By leveling objects and subjects, this theory diminishes the significance of human beings, and confers on objects the possibility to act in the world.

If from one side it presents an affinity with anti-humanistic thinking, from another it introduces a complex system of rationality, in which no essentialist definition of beings and things is possible. It proposes a mathematical scheme in which every meaning is suspended and re-arranged according to the position one occupies. A person or an object is unstably defined by the position it occupies, by its body and a set of affection it manifests.

Mark Leckey’s video Made in ‘eaven aesthetically performs the premise of non-hierarchal relationships between subjects and objects; inducing the viewer to take on the position of the object they are seeing. The video takes us on a tour of the artist’s flat through the reflective surface of the Jeff Koon’s Rabbit (1986). The camera circles the Rabbit giving a panoramic of the flat, however the artist’s image holding the camera is absent from the reflection. When one looks at the surface of the Rabbit, one is actually looking into the space assuming the point of view of the Rabbit itself. By removing the reflection of the artist, Leckey places the viewer in the body of the Rabbit. Rather than regarding the art object from the exterior, the viewer becomes its centre, and assumes its position.

In A Speaker Through Speakers Niklas Tafra endows self-consciousness to objects, the loudspeakers, seeming self-aware, describe to the audience all the electronic processes passing through them to render the sound audible. The voice that is allocated to them is the voice of themselves, channeling their own subjectivity. The agency of object is further explored though Adrianna Palazzolo’s End of the Night which features demolition vehicles destroying a bridge. The machines seem to act autonomously, with all human presence obscured. A soundtrack accompanies the images, underling some unsuspected anthropomorphic gestures of the machines.

Singling out certain objects from fictional writing, Sanna Marander explores the objects ontological status and its symbolic meaning within material culture and collective memory. For the exhibition, Marander transports blue roller blinds from the book Den Blå Rullgardinen, by Swedish writer Agnes von Krusenstjerna, to the exhibition space; allowing that object to exist awkwardly between its historical and present ontology.

Leaving objects behind and focusing of the subject Patrick Goddard devises an elaborate cinematic environment presenting a series of a videos which frequently drawn on anecdotal narratives, steeped in the literary tradition. The apparent minimal aesthetics of his videos conceals from sight different layers or ‘mash-ups’, digitally combined and synchronized, which the artist uses to spin a thread on the problematic notion of self in the present time. With an interest in the narrators ‘voice’ and its potential for falsification, his videos are often imbued with a sense of pathos. His videos hint at political disillusionment, nihilism and the absurdity of the everyday. Comedy overruns these themes with a self knowing ridicule – leaving the audience to draw their own conclusions as to the sincerity of the narrators’ voice.
